Top 10 THM Travel Staples

On our upcoming family vacation, we are traveling up north to see Mt. Rushmore and the Wisconsin Dells. Five adults and four kids.

BUT, traveling is not always a THM friendly event, especially when you are the only one out of nine that eats this way.

This is my top 10 list of MUST HAVES for traveling THM style.

WARNING: Includes Frankenfoods. That’s how I travel.

1. Flat Out Foldit

My first MUST HAVE for traveling.  You can order a single or double cheeseburger just about anywhere the rest of the group eats. At Sonic, I order a double cheeseburger and drink – no fries or tots. The carbs might inch over 10, but I’m ok with that. 9 grams net carbs, 2.5 grams fat

2. Planters NUT-rition Heart Healthy Mix

While close to home, I usually grab the single packs. Traveling such a long distance some days on this trip, I have chosen to purchase several small cans. The key here is not overdoing it. 2 grams net carbs, 15 grams fat per serving

3. Mission Carb Balance Tortillas

I did say Frankenfoods. They don’t bother me, though I secretly wish they did. These fabulous items can replace a tortilla at almost any restaurant, though switching tortillas can be a very messy task.  Items 4 & 5 are great with #3! 3 grams net carbs, 2 grams fat

4. Jif To Go Natural Peanut Butter Packs

WOW! These have changed my snacking. No mess. Perfect size. Put half of this on your tortilla to keep it in S territory. WARNING: You WILL be tempted to use the entire package. Bring a ziploc bag and seal the leftovers right up! 4 grams net carbs, 10 grams fat (for 1/2)

5. Laughing Cow Cheese Wedges

Bringing a small insulated bag with me, I can keep these cool for a good portion of the trip.  Another great spread for your low carb tortilla. The creamy swiss light flavor is a favorite, but the pepperjack is great too! You can also eat them without a tortilla to skip the carbs. 1 gram net carbs, 1.5 grams fat (pictured flavor)

6. Dark Chocolate – at least 85%

Dark Chocolate is a staple for home or travel. I typically eat the Moser Roth brand from Aldi, but several companies make great dark chocolate. You choose. 6 grams net carbs, 12.5 grams fat (per piece)

7. Apples


Apples provide great nutrition but can spike your blood sugar. Take that #4 and eat about 1 tsp of PB with your apple. No spike!

8. Wasa Crackers

A little LC Wedge on one of these is heavenly!  Try it.  You won’t want to travel without it again. 9 grams net carbs, 0 grams fat

9. Sweet Blend

Sweet Blend, trim healthy mama, THM Whatever you do, don’t forget to take some sweetener with you. I love the official THM Sweet Blend, but many people prefer swerve, stevia, or another brand.  Just try to stay with the sweeteners closest to natural.

10. Water

Self explanatory.

THM isn’t for everyone. Frankenfoods aren’t either.  But it’s great for those like me just trying to keep it together while traveling with such a diverse group of tastebuds!
